How to Speed up Lotus Notes 8.5.1!

След инсталация на новия клиент 8.5.1, за някои скоростта на отваряне и работа се забавя - учудващо? Но и за това Lotus администраторите са намерили изход - промяна в jvm.properties файла.
При мен инсталацията мина доста добре, доволна съм от скоростта на отваряне, дори не съм забелязала разлика от 8.5 версията - Бързичко. :)

Промяната в jvm.properties файла става по следния начин (оставям разучаването на Lotus администраторите):

"After downloading and upgrading my own client from R8.5 to R8.5.1, I thought (or imagined?) that my client was a little slower than the usual. Right away, I presumed that the jvm.properties file had been overwritten and I tried to run the code from my “old” button (grab the code in this post if you want). To my surprise, my code from the previous button didn’t work. After a bit of troubleshooting, I discovered that the jvm.properties file had moved in Lotus Notes R8.5.1. Other bloggers discovered this as well, like Mr. Andrew Pollack who posted something on his blog here.
 

So, what did I do? I updated the code for the button …


The Updated Code


With the change in location of the jvm.properties file in Lotus Notes R8.5.1, and after a few suggestions from the employees where I work, I updated the button to do the following:


  • It supports Lotus Notes R8.5.1 (duh!)
  • It warns people to never select a memory value higher than the amount of RAM installed in the machine (see the 1st comment on the original post on Andrew’s blog).
  • It creates an “UndoJVM.bat” batch file to roll-back the changes IF something goes wrong (like an employee who thinks it would be fun to try to select more memory than what’s installed in his machine).
  • It tells the employee about the “UndoJVM.bat” file."

Abstract
This document describes how to download and assemble IBM Lotus Connections 2.5 using the Passport Advantage Online Web site.
 
Download Description
To install IBM Lotus Connections 2.5, download the required parts listed below.

More information
To access a wide variety of technical resources for this product, see the Lotus Connections Web page.

Space requirements
   * 2.5 GB of disk space to store the full set of downloadable parts, plus 3.5 GB of disk space to unpack the parts.
   * 50 GB  of disk space to install the product (including databases).

Downloading and assembling the product
  1. Navigate your browser to the Find Downloads and Media page on the IBM Passport Advantage Online Web site. (You must log in to continue.)
  2. Select the Find by part number search option under Download finder options.
  3. Search for each downloadable image by part number (parts are listed and described by platform).
  4. Download all the parts that you need.
  5. Unpack each of the parts to a single, temporary directory on your system.
  6. Open the Quick Start image and follow the instructions in the Quick Start Guide to install the product.

След анонсирането на Panda Bear помощника за крайния потребител в управлението на Lotus Quickr team places, сега идва помощникът за администраторите. Той се нарича Flipper и е бета версия.

Каква е ROI на Lotus Notes and Domino?

Philip Story разказва в своя блог за ROI на Lotus Notes and Domino. Една наистина интересна възвращаемост :) Philip не я измерва в пари (реални), а в нещо друго. Тъй като той се занимава в по-голямата част от времето си с администрация, изчислява ROI в знания или в това за какъв период са валидни неговите вече придобити знания. В началото той казва: "Of course, the return on investment I'm talking about here is in terms of training - basically, for how long is my knowledge still valid?  So I've had a think on how to express this. And here's the result - my own Lost Knowledge Of Notes and Domino list... "

  • R7 - RnRMgr replaces old Rooms & Resources system
  • R8 - Out of Office Service can be used instead of the Agent
  • R8 - Clustering between R8 servers now uses Streaming Clustering
  • R8 - Client (optionally) uses the Eclipse platform
Накрая неговото обобщение звучи така: "If you learn to administer a feature of Domino/Notes, the chances are that knowledge will last you a decade or more."
